Grand Forks voters may get another crack at a 10-mill increase in the school district’s building fund later this year.
School Superintendent Terry Brenner says he hasn’t had time to discuss Tuesday’s failed vote with school board members -but he took some positives in the fact that 54.6 percent of voters supported the tax levy. It failed to gain the 60% majority needed to win passage. “I would suspect, and we will talk about this with the board. that we would want to bring that back sooner rather than later. It’s something we could do probably within 90 days.”
Brenner says he expects the district to take a pause on the idea of a K-8 campus at Valley Middle School. Voters rejected an $86 million dollar bond for that project – as well as other infrastructure improvements. Brenner says he still has some concerns about the future of Valley. “I continue to say Valley Middle is one steam pipe burst away from closing. Not getting the 10 mills across the finish line will create some challenges from a buildings and grounds management fund.”
Over 54 hundred people voted in this week’s election.
