A memorial service this morning (Thursday) outside the Grand Forks Police Department to honor Officer Cody Holte who died in the line of duty one year ago today.
Holte was killed in an exchange of gunfire in a south side apartment building.
Grand Forks Police Chief Mark Nelson says that day is burned into the minds of law enforcement and the community. “we witnessed the best and worst of what mankind has to offer one year ago.” According to Nelson the officers laid it all on the line to assist one another during a violent encounter.
Nelson says it’s important to keep moving forward to honor Holte’s legacy while doing the job he loved. “Although the number #639 will never be used again his legacy will live in our hearts and minds…Rest In Peace Cody…we’ve got it from here.”
A jury trial for the man arrested in the shooting – Salamah Pendleton – is scheduled to begin June 29th.
