Grand Forks officials plan to toss out a survey in the near future to help gauge likes and dislikes about the current recycling program.

The city is preparing a Request for Proposal on a new service contract. It’s estimated that between 30% and 45% of residents utilize curbside recycling on a biweekly basis.   In addition operators offer three drop-off sites in the city.

According to a staff report Grand Forks residents pay $3.35 cents per month for recycling compared to $3.81 in Bismarck…$4.47 in Moorhead…and an even $4.00 dollars in Fargo through a subscription program.

City Administrator Todd Feland told council members this week the data will help the city formulate a future plan of action.  “The last time we did a survey was 10 plus years ago and 70% of citizens of Grand Forks like the service.  When we come back with the RFP it will have a series of menus that you can pick from.”

Feland says he would anticipate the council making some decisions about recycling by mid-summer.  Grand Forks has offered a program since 1990 – expanding to curbside pickup in 1995.  Grand Forks residents recycle around 2,500 tons of material per year.
