Ambassador Motel: vacancy sign fades to black

By Doug Barrett Apr 23, 2021 | 8:35 AM

Three weeks after the Ambassador Motel in Grand Forks was posted “unsafe” to occupy or enter the final residents have moved out.  There was concern over where those people would go with the clock ticking to leave the Inn.  Officers of the GFPD were on hand as the motel property was shuttered shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Sue Shirek of the Northlands Rescue Mission says they made it known to residents that their doors were open.  Shirek says they were prepared to handle an influx of between 20 and 35 people but it didn’t materialize.  She says they also made Northland’s social work team available.  “The response was very limited.  People were not interested and a lot of them didn’t need assistance.”

An inspection of the 22 unit motel on South Washington in March resulted in the Grand Forks Building Inspections Department to determine the structure “poses an imminent danger to life…health… property…and safety of the public or its occupants.”
