Smoking materials are being blamed for sparking a fire that heavy damaged a twelve-plex unit of the Cherry Arms Condominiums in south Grand Forks on Tuesday. The Grand Forks Fire Department was notified of the blaze shortly before 12:30 p.m. When crews arrived smoke and flames were coming from the roof of the structure. The damage was pegged at some $200,000 dollars. Displaced tenants are being assisted by the Red Cross. There were no injuries.

The Grand Forks Fire Department battled a south side condo fire this afternoon. Crews were notified of the blaze shortly before 12:30 p.m. When they arrived flames were visible from the roof area of Unit C of the Cherry Arms Condominiums on the 3400-3500 block of Cherry Street. Multiple trucks were utilized in extinguishing the fire at the twelve-plex building. There are no known injuries. The bulk of the structural damage appears to be to the roof area. Firefighters remain on the scene looking for hot spots. The cause is under investigation.
