Deer opener in North Dakota, Minnesota: What to know before heading out

(Valley News Live) – Deer firearm hunting season is officially underway in the region, kicking off at noon Friday in North Dakota and opening Saturday across Minnesota.

For both seasoned hunters and beginners preparing to head into the woods, local outfitters emphasize that proper preparation, staying comfortable, and following safety regulations are critical to a successful hunt.

“Comfort for me is the most important thing when you’re out in the woods,” said Mike Muhonen with The Outdoorsman in Fargo. “When you’re comfortable, you get to stay out there longer… The longer you’re out there, the better chance you have of seeing some game.”

Staying warm and dry

Recent rainfall across the region means hunters should prepare for wet ground and damp conditions. Muhonen recommends focusing on cold-weather and moisture-resistant essentials:

  • Waterproof boots and wool socks: Keeping feet dry is essential for enduring long hours outdoors. Pairing quality waterproof boots with wool socks provides both insulation and moisture protection.
  • Layering and outerwear: A dependable warm jacket, gloves, and a beanie are key staples.
  • Blinds and heaters: Many hunters now utilize permanent or pop-up ground blinds equipped with small portable heaters, reducing the need for bulky heavy layers while waiting out game.

Safety and legal requirements

Before heading into the field, hunters must ensure they have their required tags, proper licenses, and lawful firearms.

State regulations also require hunters to wear blaze orange clothing to remain visible and safe in the field. Muhonen noted specialized gear is not required to meet legal standards; thin blaze orange slipover vests worn over an existing winter jacket or work coat satisfy safety rules.

North Dakota’s deer gun season opens at noon Friday, while Minnesota’s firearm season opens Saturday morning. Hunters are encouraged to check their local state DNR regulations for specific zone dates, shooting hours, and tagging rules.
