(KFYR) – US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. met with statewide leaders to hear directly from health care workers to get a better understanding of access to care across the state.

The conversation focused on health care in rural areas of the state, as well as urban areas. The meeting included officials from the North Dakota HHS.

During the discussion, Senator John Hoeven stressed the importance of ensuring an effective partnership between the NDHHS, HHS and health care providers across the state.

There has been a full year-one rural health transformation funding requirement. Since August, North Dakota has revealed almost $60 million to transform rural healthcare.

“But these hospitals play a critical role in these communities. The largest payer in the community, the highest salaries in many of these communities and they are cultural centers. They’re really just centers of the community and when they lose them, the communities often collapse around the crater,” said Secretary Kennedy.

The year-two funding is expected soon from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
