Grand Forks County Sheriff Andy Schneider Proposing Restructuring Of Pay Scale For County Correctional Officers

(KNOX) – Grand Forks County Sheriff Andy Schneider is proposing there be a restructuring of the pay scale for county correctional officers. He is making this suggestion in order to deal with a staffing shortage and to have higher salaries for employees.

Schneider told the County Commission Tuesday that his office had six candidates to be a corrections officer, and only one of the six agreed to take the job. A big reason is because of what their salary and health benefits would have been.

A county job posting back in August showed that a person who would be hired as a full time correctional officer 1 position would make $24.83 per hour. Schneider proposed moving correctional officers to the sheriff’s office’s pay scale from their own, which would increase a salary and add a new pay grade based on that scale. He presented some numbers although said there were some mistakes in the calculations.

The sheriff’s department has been budgeted for about $7 million in 2027.  The correctional center currently has eight openings for correctional officers, and there are expected to be more openings soon. Schneider explains what could result from those positions being filled.

Commissioners suggested to Schneider that he provide more exact numbers to the county commission meeting on December 1st.
