The Grand Forks council took the first step towards developing 20 acres of land near the Alerus Center with the goal of providing more amenities for young families and kids.
The council approved an agreement with Red River BMX to build a race track on a two acre parcel of land. Other potential uses for the site include a children’s museum…indoor turf…a destination park…and learning center.
Red River BMX would manage construction with the city providing stormwater infrastructure…electrical service…and some asphalt to compliment the dirt track.
City Administrator Todd Feland says the site development would be done in incremental steps. “You can see us adding water and sewer and other amenities but this gets them going this year knowing that a longer term plan is coming.”
Mayor Brandon Bochenski says federal stimulus dollars could be a potential funding source to help jumpstart additional projects.
Supporters hope to see the track ready for use by June or July.
