(Valley News Live) – The Larimore Fire Department is urging farmers to take extra precautions after responding to multiple combine fires in recent days as harvest continues in dry conditions.
Fire officials say long hours in the field, dry crops, and dust buildup on machinery can create dangerous fire hazards. Once a fire starts, it can spread quickly through equipment and standing or cut crops.
The department is asking farmers and equipment operators to check machinery frequently for excessive heat, dust and crop residue, and other potential ignition sources. Crews also recommend that every combine, tractor, truck and other piece of harvest equipment carry at least one properly charged and accessible fire extinguisher.
Officials stress that farmers should call 911 at the first sign of smoke, unusual odors or overheating, rather than waiting to see if the problem gets worse.
They also emphasize that personal safety comes first. Operators are advised to only try to extinguish a fire if it is clearly safe to do so. If the fire grows or threatens anyone nearby, firefighters say people should move away and keep a safe distance.
