(NewsDakota.com) – On Monday, August 31, 2026, the Valley City Police Department responded to City Park following a report of a stolen vehicle. A few minutes later, the same vehicle was reported leaving the scene of a traffic crash at the intersection of 8th Avenue Southwest and 4th Street Southwest. The vehicle was last seen traveling southbound on 8th Avenue Southwest.
Police Chief Nick Horner said at approximately 5:38 p.m., a rollover crash involving the stolen vehicle was reported near mile marker 288 on Interstate 94. The North Dakota Highway Patrol investigated the crash and arrested the driver, 49-year-old Wendell Johnson for driving under the influence, fourth or subsequent offense within 15 years.
Johnson was also referred to the Barnes County States Attorney for possible charges of theft of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a reportable accident. The crash remains under investigation with the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
