(KNOX) – There will be a public hearing today in Thief River Falls that will consider amending some city ordinances. There will be a discussion on whether to limit the number of cannabis retail businesses within city limits and to possibly increase the distance in buffer zones between schools and attractions.
A buffer zone increase that would go from 300 feet to 500 feet is being proposed. A limit on cannabis businesses would also be included so the city can comply with state regulations. The Planning and Zoning Commission wants to limit the number of cannabis retail stores to one for every 12,500 residents.
These possible ordinance changes come after the state decided that its cannabis rulings, that include issuing licensing, now directly goes through the Office of Cannabis Management.
The City Council will vote on these proposals after the public hearing. The cannabis retail store that is involved is supposed to replace a former Dairy Queen at 517 Duluth Avenue South.
