(KNOX) – The UND Football team will start the 2026 season tonight when they host Long Island University. The Fighting Hawks went 8-6 last season, and they won their first round game in the FCS Playoffs.
Senior Edge Rusher and Preseason All-American Lance Rucker suffered a foot injury during practice last week, and had surgery. Head Coach Eric Schmitt explains how long he’ll be out for.
Even though Rucker, won’t be on the field, Schmitt believes that he’ll still have an important impact on the team.
Schmitt expects LIU to bring a tough offense, that will be spearheaded by a duel threat Quarterback.
Offensive Coordinator Danny Freund also expects LIU’s defense to bring a challenge.
Quarterback Jerry Kaminski will be the Fighting Hawks’ starter for the second straight season. He’s enjoyed building chemistry with his offense during training camp, and he’s excited to see the team’s depth carry into the season.
Defensive End Michael Devereaux says that Rucker’s injury fuels him and the defensive to fill the hole Rucker’s leaving.
UND is looking to start a season 1-0 for the first time since 2023. Devereaux believes beating LIU is just a starting point.
