Grand Forks County grass fires fueled by dry conditions

By Doug Barrett Mar 28, 2021 | 6:34 PM

Fire teams from Manvel and Emerado battled a large grass fire northwest of the Grand Forks Airport this afternoon (Sunday).  The blaze was reported around 4:00 p.m.  Crews were working to keep the flames from spreading to nearby homes.  The smoke was visible miles away.  No word on what sparked the fire.   The GFSO blocked traffic on a one-half mile stretch of 17th Street NE to allow emergency vehicles access to battle the blaze.

The National Weather Service has issued a RED FLAG WARNING from noon Monday until 1:00 a.m. Tuesday for much of the region due to strong winds and low humidity.

A RED FLAG WARNING means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will shortly.  A combination of strong winds…low humidity…and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
