Grand Forks County State’s Attorney Haley Wamstad Says Proposed Sales Tax Might Not Get Carried Out As Originally Intended

(KNOX) –Grand Forks County State’s Attorney Haley Wamstad says that a proposed sales tax to offset property taxes for residents that would also fund the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, may not be carried out as it was originally implied. 

Wamstad says she did research into a possible new county sales tax after it was suggested by Sheriff Andy Schneider. She told the County Commission last Tuesday that the sales tax would need voters to approve.

Schneider’s idea for the sales tax would use part of its revenue to replace funding for the sheriff’s 2027 budget. The rest of the revenue would be used to offer a property tax credit to county property owners. Wamstad also referenced a 1993 legal opinion relating to this proposal.

The sales tax would help with budget relief for the sheriff’s office, but the other county departments would be limited by the state’s three percent cap on property tax levy increases. 

A ballot measure would need to be created by August 31st, if voters were to decide on the proposal this November.
