(Valley News Live) – The family of the one-year-old boy who survived the August 6 attack in Mandan says his surgery went well and doctors expect a full physical recovery, according to a post on a public GoFundMe page set up by the family.
“Colton is recovering in the hospital — his surgery went well, and doctors expect a full physical recovery from this attack,” the family wrote. “Last night, he finally smiled at us, and it was the most beautiful thing we’ve ever seen. After everything we’ve been through, seeing that smile brought a wave of overwhelming emotion and relief.”
The update comes as the community continues to grieve the deaths of two other children, a five-month-old and a three-year-old, who died following the incident at a residence on South Frontier Trail in Mandan. Kailey Erhart, 22, faces two counts of murder and additional charges in connection with the August 6 attack. A police affidavit revealed that video on the children’s father’s phone showed Erhart carrying one of the children while armed with a pistol and telling the father, “Say goodbye to your kids.” When officers arrived, they found Erhart holding a knife to her own throat. She dropped it and told officers to kill her.
Erhart made her initial court appearance August 8. Her case remains pending.
