(KNOX) –There was a grand opening ceremony for a new World War II Heritage Trail and exhibit at the Barnes County Museum that opened in Valley City on Thursday. The exhibit honors the community’s role during the war.
The Barnes County Historical Society advocated to have Valley City named North Dakota’s World War II Heritage City. The North Dakota congressional delegation supported the proposal in a letter to the National Park Service in 2024. The NPS awarded them the honor in 2025, and Valley City is now the smallest community in the nation to receive the honor.
The trail and exhibit displays local connections to World War II history. The exhibit features Valley City’s role in several things pertaining to the war; like the Manhattan Project, the Ghost Army, the “Farmerettes,” who kept American agriculture running during the war, the Nuremberg Trials and Norway’s wartime resistance.
