Three Bridges Connecting Northwestern Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota to be Replaced

By Alex Carmenaty Jul 10, 2026 | 8:30 AM

(KNOX) – Three older bridges that connect Northwestern Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota are going to be replaced. A $24 million federal grant is being given by the U.S. Department of Transportation to fund construction.

The funding will pay for new crossings at the Nielsville, Hendrum, and Georgetown bridges. All of these bridges are along the Red River. One of the bridges is already closed, and the other two have weight limits that have caused issues with farm traffic, freight shipments, and emergency responses. Construction is expected to start next year and be finished by 2029.

The project was supported by counties in both Minnesota and North Dakota, as and it is being supported by the region’s congressional delegation.
