(KNOX) – A 43-year-old Detroit Lakes man is facing a felony assault charge after police say he shoved a 10-foot aluminum pipe into another man’s chest during a dispute over a missing chainsaw. He then used a hand scythe to destroy the man’s phone.
Micah Scott Ailie was charged in Becker County District Court with one felony count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, and two misdemeanor counts of domestic assault and intentional damage to property. The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, and a possible $14,000 fine.
According to a criminal complaint, the victim went to Ailie’s residence on Monday on County Highway 6 in Becker County. He confronted him about a chainsaw that Ailie had borrowed and didn’t return. Ailie was upset and confrontational, and the two began arguing. Ailie ended up grabbing a 10-foot aluminum pipe and shoved it into the victim’s chest. The two struggled over the pipe before the victim was able to take it away and put it in a barn. The victim’s phone was knocked out of his pocket during the encounter.
When the victim came back out of the barn looking for his phone, Ailie was standing over it holding a hand scythe. Ailie then used the scythe to destroy the phone. The victim told police he was scared Ailie would assault him with the scythe. A Becker County Sergeant noticed a distinct dark line across the victim’s shirt at his chest level. When the victim lifted his shirt, he also noted visible redness on his chest.
Ailie was not immediately located. A deputy responded to a Detroit Lakes residence the following day where the victim reported Ailie was inside. Ailie was found in the basement and arrested.
A deputy found a burnt glass pipe on Ailie and he later admitted it was his. He told police he had been prescribed ADHD medication, but he thought it was too expensive. He used methamphetamine as a substitute and had used it the day of the incident.
Ailie told investigators he had been searching for the chainsaw when the victim was standing in his way and would not move, so he used the pipe to move him. He denied that he struck the victim with it. He also said the victim pushed him and that caused the phone to fall. He admitted to picking it up and throwing it.
Ailie is being held in custody under a detention order that is pending further court proceedings.
