(KNOX) –The U.S. Department of Energy has made The University of North Dakota College of Engineering and Mines eligible to receive funding for a pilot project focused on rare earth elements and critical minerals recovery.
The project is focused on extracting critical minerals and rare earth elements from North Dakota’s lignite coal. A release from Senator Kevin Cramer’s office says the DOE makes UND and others eligible to receive a portion of a $75 million fund as the Trump administration continues to explore pathways to secure the domestic supply chain of minerals.
The pilot project takes lignite coal mined in North Dakota and extracts a mixture of rare earth elements. These are materials that can be used for electronics, defense systems and magnets. The College of Engineering and Mines has been trying to commercialize a strategic materials manufacturing platform.
The North Dakota Congressional Delegation sent a letter supporting the grant to the Secretary of Energy in February.
