(KNOX/Valley News Live) – A Long Island, New York man is facing two felony charges after police say he threatened to murder employees with a baseball bat during a disturbance at an East Grand Forks motel. 23-year-old Matthew Dylan Calla was charged Monday in Polk County District Court with two counts of felony threats of violence. Each count carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and /or a $10,000 fine. Calla warned of a “blood bath,” and told 911 dispatchers he planned to buy a shotgun.
East Grand Forks police were first called to the Plaza Motel when Calla dialed 911. He told dispatchers he was afraid of being attacked by bears after hearing growling the night before. He also believed he was speaking through a walkie-talkie. Officers spoke with Calla and cleared the scene.
Less than 90 minutes later, Calla called 911 again, demanding a spare key to his room and threatening there would be a “blood bath” because “people were stirring the pot.”
When officers returned to the Plaza Motel, a motel employee approached them visibly shaken. The employee said Calla had threatened to kill her and other staff with a baseball bat, and told her he would kill her if she came near him. He claimed he was being held in a concentration camp where people were being killed with injections.
After he was arrested, Calla apparently mouthed something threatening toward the motel employee with his eyes wide open and aggressively elbowed the air. While being transported to jail, he yelled at the arresting officer and told him he “might as well execute him right now.”
Calla is being held in custody under an order of detention pending further court proceedings. No bail amount was listed in the complaint. He has also been banned from the Plaza Motel.
