(KNOX) – There will be construction later today on the north side of the intersection of 42nd Street and DeMers Avenue. The south side of 42nd Street and DeMers will still be open. Ames Construction is working on the project, and the construction is expected to start sometime in the mid morning.

A temporary traffic bypass is also being prepared. Crews will begin paving the bypass today, and the bypass will be open on July 6. Today’s construction is a part of a five phase project.

Phase one will be the building of railroad and vehicle/pedestrian bypass. It will also include the movement of some water lines that run through the area where the two bridges will be built.

Phase two will be the construction of the bridges, reconstruction of DeMers Avenue and the placement of the watermain and storm sewer.

Phase three will be the removal of the bypass.

Phase four will be the earthwork and grading on 42nd Street. It will also include the building of the jughandle to connect it to the DeMers Avenue bridge.

Phase five will be the addition of signage, street lighting and striping.

Construction on the project started on April 20. Workers will build an underpass along 42nd Street, rerouting DeMers Avenue and the BNSF railroad to go over 42nd to prevent traffic congestion from the passing trains. The project also includes a jughandle ramp connecting 42nd and DeMers.
