(KNOX) – North Dakota is one of 17 states apart of a lawsuit that is suing to stop a California law that would require sweeping changes to how plastic packaging is made, sold, and recycled across the country.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California. It’s going against California’s 2022 Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act. The states argue California is overstepping its authority by forcing businesses nationwide to overhaul their products and supply chains just to access the California market.

Nebraska is leading the coalition. Others states like Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia are also joining the lawsuit.

The National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors also joined the lawsuit. They represents roughly 35,000 companies operating nearly 150,000 locations across the country.
