(KNOX) – There will be a grand opening ceremony on Wednesday for a dedication at the Griggs Park Playground in East Grand Forks.
The playground is being dedicated in honor of longtime Parks and Recreation Department Employee Dave Aker, who died in 2024 at 66 years old. Aker worked as a seasonal worker before he was the department’s supervisor from 1994 to 2006. He would eventually serve as superintendent from 2006 up to his retirement in 2016. He also was the Head Coach of the Sacred Heart football team and the East Grand Forks American Legion baseball team.
The new playground was built in partnership with American Crystal Sugar, Polk County Social Services and the Aker family. The project will cost as much as $95,000, with the city providing $75,000.
