(KNOX) – The University of North Dakota is hoping the State Board of Higher Education approves additional construction projects when they meet later this month.

UND Flight Operations is looking to replace a fiber optic communications cable at the Grand Forks Airport that links the NDUS Data Center on campus.

In making the request UND says the existing 7.5 mile line is buried in shallow ground and has been struck and repaired numerous times. The staff report goes on to say the safety of students, faculty and staff is dependent on the fiber cable for connecting airport operations with the campus network.

The replacement cost is estimated at $1.35 million dollars.

In a separate request UND wants to upgrade the Mark & Claudia National Security Corridor in Harrington Hall to the tune of $1.8 million dollars. The work includes construction of a local data center to support research and an optical lab focusing on intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

The Budget and Finance Committee will get its first look at the requests on Tuesday.
