(KNOX) – Law enforcement from throughout the region joined local leaders and residents in Grand Forks Wednesday for the 14th annual Northern Valley Police Memorial Service.
Last year 111 law enforcement officials across the U.S. and Canada died in the line of duty. So far this year another 40 have been killed.
Polk County Sheriff James Tadman told those in attendance that the event not only mourns the loss of those who died but celebrates the lives they lived.
North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley delivered the keynote address. Wrigley said those who take up the profession stand between order and chaos. Wrigley says the people of North Dakota remember our fallen heroes today and forevermore.
According to the A-G the state has seen over 4,000 more victims of violent crime each year compared to a decade ago. Wrigley says behind every call was someone on duty.
The ceremony included a presentation of colors…a roll call for fallen officers…and a 21 gun salute.
North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong has directed all government agencies to fly flags at half-staff on Thursday in observance of national Police Week.
At dusk on Thursday and Friday the State Capitol windows will be lit to display a “Thin Blue Line” to show support to law enforcement – past and present.
