(KNOX) – The Grand Forks City Council has no appetite for eliminating the Alerus Center Commission.
Members voted unanimously last night to receive and file a report that discussed the pros and cons of having the council running the events center. The staff report noted with three vacancies on the commission it might be a good time to consider rolling the duties over to the council before filling the open slots.
During the discussion council member Rebecca Osowski expressed concerns about the annual losses the building has incurred. Danny Weigel of the council says the profit and loss statement does not take into account the financial impact to the local economy. Councilman Ken Vein added a major remodel last year also impacted the Alerus Center’s bottom line.
Following the vote several members did express a desire to ensure the council has the final say on certain negotiated contracts including a new usage agreement with UND and a future management contract. The Oak View Group currently manages the day to day duties of the Alerus Center.
