(Minnesota Reformer) – Democratic lawmakers proposed $50 million in one-time emergency rental assistance to support families impacted by Operation Metro Surge in the first meeting of the year of the House housing committee.
Republicans voted against the bill, and it failed to advance past the tied committee.
HF3403 would have infused $50 million into the Family Homeless Prevention and Assistance Program, which is administered by counties and tribes. The money would have gone to landlords to cover rent for low-income families facing eviction. A Senate companion, SF3596, will be heard in the DFL-controlled Senate housing committee.
The vote revealed partisan divisions over how, or whether to address the fallout from the surge of ICE agents sent to Minnesota by the Trump administration late last year, which is likely to be a theme of the 2026 legislative session.
