(By Mike Moen. Minnesota News Connection) – Getting younger generations interested in the skilled trades remains a popular topic as older workers retire. An industry official in the Twin Cities continues his mission to connect young students with experts in specialty areas.

The promotion of career training for the trades might involve images of someone in a hard hat swinging a hammer on a construction site. But Brian Kelley feels there isn’t enough outreach encouraging kids to get excited about a career in associated jobs such as architecture, engineering or interior design. Next month, The Young Builders and Designers Program Kelley founded and directs will host its third annual convention in Minneapolis, where young attendees may plant a seed for their future if the presentations get their attention.

“We’re having that conversation early enough to say, ‘What is it that you want to do, and where are your gifts and talents?'” he said.

This year, Kelley said, they plan to go longer with Q-and-A sessions so that the kids taking part can learn more from professionals in these fields. The program aims to have a social impact by setting aside 100 free passes for students from low-income households.
