(KNOX) – North Dakota pickup owners will get a different vehicle registration card.

The state previously doubled the shipping weight on the registration as a way of setting registration fees.

It confused owners and prompted a lot of questions for the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Lawmakers changed the law and now trucks will be registered at their official weights and the amount they can carry. It won’t change registration fees.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation Driver License Director said that when somebody would look at the registration card, they would see a much higher weight on that card and that would create confusion. And people would think they were overpaying for their pickup truck.

The state registered nearly 300,000 trucks in 2025.
