(KNOX) – The Grand Forks Police Department has earned its fourth international accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) at the CALEA Conference in Jacksonville, FL.

CALEA is the standard in public safety accreditation and sets forth a rigorous process to earn the designation.

The Grand Forks Police Department is one of three agencies in North Dakota to receive CALEA Accreditation.

The process of CALEA Accreditation begins with a rigorous self-assessment, requiring a review of policies, practices, and processes against internationally accepted public safety standards. This is followed up with an annual assessment by independent assessors with significant public safety experience and concluded by a public hearing and review of all reporting documentation by a governing body of twenty-one commissioners. The CALEA Accreditation award is for four years.

The Grand Forks Police Department was originally accredited in November 2014 and the agency is required to maintain continuous compliance with CALEA standards.
