(By Mike Moen. Minnesota News Connection) – With the holiday shopping season here, digital ads are sure to find their way into your social media feeds and email accounts.

Minnesota has a new law designed to give people some recourse if their digital privacy is being invaded. In late summer, Minnesota joined nearly 20 other states enacting laws meant to boost consumer rights when their personal information, including online browsing history, is bought and sold. Minnesotans now have the right to “opt out” when businesses sell, profile and target advertising using personal data.

Rep. Steve Elkins, DFL-Bloomington, helped lead the law’s passage and hopes Minnesotans do their part.

“We’re all still going to have to be personally vigilant about these things,” Elkins emphasized. “Making sure that all of these settings and our web browsers are set to maximize the rights we have already.”
