GFPD sees uptick in drug cases in 2020

By Doug Barrett Mar 19, 2021 | 8:58 AM

Last week’s release of the 2020 crime report by Grand Forks police showed a troubling trend in the drug battle.

Drug and narcotic arrests climbed 10.23% last year.   Police fielded 528 incident reports in 2020.  On a related note the GFPD also issued 617 citations for drugs and drug related paraphernalia – a ten-year high.

Grand Forks P-D Lt-Derik Zimmel says addiction is a community problem.  “Certainly charges do come into play but addiction is not a problem where we can arrest our way out of.”

Zimmel says fortunately there are a lot of organizations trying to impact the drug issue in a positive way.
