(KNOX) – Governor Doug Burgum has proclaimed Oct. 6-12, 2024, as Fire Prevention Week in North Dakota with the theme of “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”
“A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is your first line of defense against fire. This simple device can make all the difference when every second counts,” said State Fire Marshal Doug Nelson. “Take some time this week to check your smoke alarms and ensure they’re functioning properly.”
The testing, maintaining and replacing of smoke alarms should become part of a regular routine by following these tips:
- Test Monthly: Make it a habit to test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Simply press the test button and listen for the alarm.
- Replace Batteries: Change the batteries in your smoke alarms once a year or when the low battery warning chirps.
- Replace Alarms After 10 Years: Smoke alarms don’t last forever. Replace them every 10 years, or sooner if they’re not functioning properly.
- Install in Key Areas: Ensure smoke alarms are installed in every sleeping area, in hallways outside bedrooms and on every level of the home.
While observing Fire Prevention Week, North Dakotans are encouraged to review their fire safety plans, discuss escape routes with household members, and ensure everyone knows the sound of the smoke alarm. When an alarm sounds, every second matters, and immediate action can prevent tragedy.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal, North Dakota Firefighter’s Association, North Dakota Forest Service and local fire departments collaborate year-round to keep communities fire safe and educate residents on the dangers associated with fire.
