(North Dakota Monitor) -North Dakotans will see three names on the presidential ballot this November.

Alongside Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, Libertarian nominee Chase Oliver also filed to appear on the state ballot by the Tuesday afternoon deadline.

Two local races saw last-minute entries, according to the North Dakota Secretary of State’s Office.

Rep. Dennis Nehring, R-Williston, is running to defend his House seat in District 23.

Nehring was appointed to the Legislature this spring by the District 23 Republican Party after the resignation of Rep. Scott Dyk, who cited family reasons. Nehring is a former Williams County school board member and been listed as a leader of the Williston Basin chapter of the Sons of Liberty.

Democrat Mark Casler also is running for the open seat. Casler is a Williston native who works for a company that sells construction and farm equipment.

The winner will serve for the remainder of Dyk’s unfinished term, which ends in 2026.

District 23 is also represented by Republicans Rep. Nico Rios and Sen. Todd Beard.

The district, which includes land northwest and southwest of Williston, is relatively new. Up until 2023, most of the area encompassing District 23 was lumped into District 2. A small portion was formerly in District 1.

Before district maps were adjusted after the 2020 census, District 23 was near Devils Lake.

Robert Tolar, an independent, on Tuesday also joined the race for Senate District 6. Tolar previously ran for District 6 as an independent against Sen. Shawn Vedaa, R-Velva, in 2022, losing with 20% of the vote.

Tolar will face Rep. Paul Thomas, R-Velva, for the Senate seat in the general election.
