NDUS hoping for a new normal return for fall semester

By Doug Barrett Feb 26, 2021 | 8:43 AM

The Dean of the UND Medical School says despite falling COVID-19 case counts it’s not time to relax campus restrictions – yet.

Dr. Joshua Wynne told members of the state Board of Higher Education today that he still believes all faculty and staff will have the opportunity to be vaccinated before the start of the fall semester.  Wynne says one area of concern remains how well the current vaccine protects against the various new variants of the virus and whether they prevent transmission.  “I continue to feel pretty confident that we will be able to get back to a new normal in the fall semester.  I just think we should rush things.”

Wynne says he does believe the recent downturn in cases across the state is due to good practice of guidelines…the rollout of vaccines…and natural immunity.  “I would say around 40% immunity if you include everything.”

Meanwhile….the City of Grand Forks, Grand Forks Public Health, and Altru are now expanding vaccinations to Tier 6 of Phase 1B of the North Dakota Department of Health plan.

Community members who are 18 and older with two high risk medical conditions are asked to visit mychart.altru.org or call 701.780.6358 to be included on the COVID-19 vaccine waitlist.
