(KNOX) – The Grand Forks Air Force Base will be conducting some U.S. Air Force missions that will happen in Africa, as defense contractor General Atomics introduced its new Remote Split Operations facility last Friday at GrandSky.
The new facility has two ground control stations that have crews with multiple staff members controlling General Atomics’ MQ-9 Reaper drones. The mission that will involve these crews will be with the U.S. Africa Command, which includes nearly all Africa.
General Atomics Leadership and U.S. Senator John Hoeven were in attendance last Friday, and Hoeven says having the pilots based in Grand Forks will save the military roughly $10 million annually.
