(KNOX) – A Knight Cities Challenge grant has been awarded to the Grand Forks Downtown Development Association that will be used for a community impact project. The grant will be for $87,500 and its purpose is to have Town Square be used as a consistent space to host all types of events.

The Knight Foundation is behind the Knight Cities Challenge. The foundation awards grants relating to arts, as well as journalism, research and community development.

The University of Vermont also received a grant from the Knight Foundation that will have them partner with 10 different Knight Foundation cities. Grand Forks is one of those cities and this grant will create an academic partnership between students and news outlets in order to support local news coverage.

UND will be given $16,000 for this project, and it will still be organized as to how students will participate and which news outlets will work with students.
