(KNOX) –A 37-year-old Grand Forks woman has been sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison in connection to a fentanyl death in East Grand Forks.
Amber Chapman was sentenced for third degree murder on September 24 in Polk County District Court. A second-degree controlled substance charge that included selling fentanyl in a prohibited zone was dropped.
East Grand Forks police were called to an apartment in April 2025 in the 1700 block of Fifth Avenue for a report of a fentanyl overdose.
Officers found an unresponsive 36-year-old woman. They tried to revive her with Narcan and CPR, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A criminal complaint says that a man who was at the apartment told investigators that he and the woman were smoking fentanyl an hour before she died. He says he passed out and that he found her unresponsive when he woke up.
Investigators discovered messages that were between Chapman and the woman that involved drug transactions and a $30 payment request for a nose piercing. Police also found purple powder from the woman’s cellphone case that tested positive for fentanyl.
Chapman had told investigators she gave the woman one-tenth of a gram of purple fentanyl outside the apartment building.
Chapman has received credit for 275 days already served, and her Minnesota sentence will run simultaneously with her North Dakota sentences.
She is ordered to return to North Dakota to complete those sentences, and she will receive credit toward her Minnesota sentence for that period of time. Minnesota time that would be remaining will be served after.
