North Dakota State K-12 Superintendent Levi Bachmeier Joins KNOX To Speak About STAYS Stipend

(KNOX) – North Dakota Republican State Representative Mike Nathe of Bismarck announced a bill on Monday that would offer teachers an annual salary bonus so they would come to North Dakota and stay long term.

The Support Teachers and Youth Succeed stipend, also known as STAYS, would award teachers a $3,400 bonus. This is being done in an effort to help solve the teacher shortage across the state. 

North Dakota State K-12 Superintendent Levi Bachmeier is one of the bill’s biggest supporters, and he says other legislators and Governor Armstrong have been trying to find a way to hire teachers. He tells KNOX’s The Ryan Cunningham Show.

The bill would come from 10 percent of the state’s Common Schools Trust Fund earnings for two years and there would be a 25 percent cap on the average teacher base salary.  Public and Private School teachers would also be able to receive this stipend.
