(KNOX) –North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong gave a State of the State address to the legislature on Wednesday, before they started the special session he called. Armstrong called for a special session last month after he signed an executive order banning kratom in the state for 30 days. He says the Drug Enforcement Administration’s intent to classify the drug as a schedule one substance influenced his decision to call for the session.
Armstrong also says the DEA issued a temporary order placing three potent compounds in the Schedule One category.
Armstrong is hoping the legislature will end up voting for a permanent ban on kratom.
Since 2019, 50 North Dakotans have died from kratom, with 23 of them having the drug be their primary cause of death. Eight states already have full bans on kratom.Â
Those states are Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wisconsin.
