(KNOX) –South Dakota billionaire Thomas Denny Sanford has died at 90 years old. Sanford Health was named after him when he donated $400 million to the then Sioux Valley Health System, and he ended up gifting $2 billion to the health system. He also ended up donating more than $4 billion in philanthropic contributions to organizations in South Dakota and other places.
Sanford was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1935. He ended up becoming the founder of First Premier Bank and PREMIER Bankcard, eventually becoming the richest person in South Dakota.
There are several Sanford Health Clinics in the Grand Cities Metropolitan Area.
