(KNOX) – North Dakota lawmakers are creating an interim Artificial Intelligence and Data Center Committee to study state and federal regulations surrounding AI.

Senate Majority Leader David Hogue is leading the effort, and Rep. Mike Nathe is co-leading the effort. The committee will also include members of the House and Senate, as well as citizen experts.

The committee is expected to prepare a report and any necessary bill drafts by November. This is the standard interim committee process with support from Legislative Council staff.

The committee will focus on gathering information about federal AI laws and regulations in other states, while reviewing federal attempts to preempt state AI regulation, and considering potential statutory prohibitions on external AI that could surpass human control.
