UND Creates a New Specialized Real Estate Major

By Ryan Cunningham Jun 17, 2026 | 8:27 AM

(KNOX) – The University of North Dakota has announced that it is creating a new specialty major in real estate. UND is now the only public university in either North Dakota or Minnesota to have a dedicated real estate major.

The major will give students the opportunity to prepare and focus on advanced finance, valuation and market analysis. It will also help students prepare for careers in property appraisal, mortgage lending, development, management and investment banking.

The Fransen Department of Real Estate, Economics and Finance will honor UND alumnus Robert “Bob” Fransen, who is the founder and CEO of Timberland Partners. Fransen had an important role in developing the program, and he has been working in real estate investment and brokerage since 1978.

The program will officially start in the fall, but three students have already declared for the major, and two out of the three classes that students can register for have already reached full capacity. The four-year, 120 credit degree is available in person or online via the Nistler CoBPA.

There will be a showcase for the new major at the Fargo-Moorhead Commercial Real Estate Summit on July 30.
