(UND Sports Information) – EUGENE, Ore. – In the opening day of action at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, North Dakota’s own Louis-Lys Fanucchi made headlines on Wednesday evening with his electric performance in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase that booked him a ticket to the event finals.
Ranked as the No. 22 seed out of 24 competing athletes across two heats, Fanucchi found himself set for the second heat. The race proved to have its fair share of barrier issues for some of his fellow competitors—causing frequent lead changes—but not for the Frenchman. Fanucchi kept himself toward the middle of the pack throughout the event before an all-out dead sprint to the finish line helped him finish sixth in his heat with a time of 8:26.57.
It marked a new personal best and a new school record for the Fighting Hawk while also serving as the first fastest time in the field following the ten automatic qualifiers, therefore resulting in a clinched bid to Friday’s event finals.
In a thrilling heat, the next best qualifying time was also a clocking of 8:26.57—separated by all of .003 seconds—while the first non-qualifying time in the field was 8:27.99, just 1.32 seconds behind Fanucchi.
Competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships continues for North Dakota on Thursday evening as Jadyn Keeler takes on the women’s 10,000-meter run, which is set to kick off at approximately 9:56 p.m. CT on ESPN.
