(Bismarck Tribune) – WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced a $425 million investment to support coal plants across the country, including in North Dakota.

Trump said Thursday that his administration was invoking the Defense Production Act to “save 13 coal plants in West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, Tennessee, Arizona, Arkansas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.”
The Defense Production Act of 1950 grants the president emergency powers to compel private industry to produce goods and services necessary for national security or emergency preparedness, according to Congress’s website.
Basin Electric Power Cooperative was listed by the administration as one of the companies that would receive funding. A Basin Electric spokesperson told the Tribune the funding opportunity was not guaranteed but could support modernization efforts at Antelope Valley Station in Mercer County with up to $27 million.
