(KNOX) – Voters in Grand Forks County may get the opportunity to make changes on the manner that property taxes are allocated.
One proposed change by Commissioner Terry Bjerke received a less than warm welcome by some on the commission.
Bjerke offered up a repeal the minimum mill levy for a pair of county services, the county ambulance service and the senior center. Currently, ambulance services must receive six mils, the senior center must receive one mill.
The proposal would allow for less mills to be allocated to both, an idea that Commissioner Mark Rustad suggested would be unpopular with the voters.
“I think it’ll get absolutely crucified at the ballot box,” Rustad said, suggesting that devoting staff time to organizing the effort would not be worthwhile.
