(KNOX) – A truck hauling burning embers with a still-burning flame created fires in five locations during Thursday’s Red Flag Warning.
According to a release from the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s office, the department received a report of a semi with a side dump trailer traveling northbound on I-29 causing multiple fires at mileposts 121, 125, 126, 127, and 128, between Buxton and Thompson.
The deputy climbed onto the trailer and observed the trailer was hot to the touch, and observed the trailer was hauling a load full of ash and burnt lumber which had visible flames within the ash.
The driver stated he was hauling ash from items burned days previously near a construction site near Hillsboro. The driver was cited for driving a vehicle with a leaking or shifting load.
Reynolds and Thompson Volunteer Fire Departments extinguished the fires.
