(KNOX) – Babcock Hall on the University of North Dakota campus is the latest building slated to have a date with a wreaking ball.

The Budget and Finance Committee of the North Dakota Board of Higher Education will review plans and specs for demolishing the former home of Engineering and Mines and Chemistry at a meeting on Tuesday. Constructed in 1907 the building has been vacant since 2017.

UND estimates the move will save $30,000 dollars annually by no longer maintaining the vacant space.

An architectural firm has been hired to designate historical items for salvage
and complete a 3D scan of the building for preservation purposes.

In other committee action members are expected to approve $4.5 million dollars in renovations and deferred maintenance to UND’s Gamble Hall. The move allows for the building to house the Northern Prairie Community Clinic and the Departments of Communication Science and Disorders and Psychology. It will also help to advance the eventual razing of Columbia Hall.
