(KNOX) – Local law enforcement is reporting a high rate of a phone scam involving false information about traffic citations.
Officials reported late Tuesday afternoon at a number of North Dakota and Minnesota cell customers reported receiving text messages claiming that the customer had outstanding traffic issues that needed to be addressed. Some said these messages were the final notice the customer would receive.
The messages included threats of license suspension or other penalties if the matter was not resolved. The customer was directed to click on a link to make a payment on the citation. The messages included language described as very serious and very alarming.
Law enforcement again urges the public to delete the messages, and stresses that no legitimate law enforcement agency will enforce traffic citations in this manner. No one should send money, bit coin, or any payment through the link included. Your personal information could be compromised.
